Counselor

Alyson Albin
What inspired you to become a counselor?
My initial focus in college was Journalism, but part of my degree plan required me to take classes within the communication realm outside of Journalism. This is when I started taking psychology classes. I truly enjoyed the lectures presented by my professors and became very interested in interpersonal communication and the dynamics of relationships. I come from a long line of veterans and was inspired to work with them once I finished grad school, after deciding my junior year of college that I wanted to pursue counseling. Life took a little turn and a big jump, and I ended up entering the school counseling world after working in clinical mental health for a couple of years. Getting to make an impact on any child's life, regardless of how small, inspires me every day to become a better helper.
How do you support students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being?
I always tell students at the beginning of each year that my priorities are to keep them safe and happy. If I can manage this, my cup remains full. I am able to meet with students individually on the fly should there be a need, but I also schedule weekly sessions. Whether it's needing a hug, a shoulder to cry on, breathing techniques, or just meeting a child where they are at, I am available for any and all social/emotional needs.
How can students and parents reach out to you for help or advice?
I have an open-door policy for students! Teachers are always great about reaching out to me as soon as a student may need to speak with me, so I encourage all students to communicate this need with any of their teachers or staff members! Alternatively, if a student is more comfortable establishing a session via their parent, that is welcome as well! Parents can contact me via my school email or office phone.
